How to make a passport size photo
- 1
Choose a photo using the box above. A front-facing photo against a plain, light background works best.
- 2
Pick the photo size for your document, then move and resize the frame so the face fits the oval guide. Click "Apply crop".
- 3
Adjust brightness or contrast if needed. In the Print tab, download a single photo for online forms, or a sheet of copies on 4×6 in or A4 paper.
Passport and ID photo sizes
Choose the size your document asks for. The most common ones are built in, and you can type any other size in millimetres.
| Size | Commonly used for |
|---|---|
| 35 × 45 mm | Passports in the UK, EU countries, India, Australia and Singapore; Schengen visas |
| 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm) | US passports and visas, Indian visas and OCI cards |
| 3 × 4 cm, 4 × 6 cm, 2 × 3 cm | Indonesian pas foto for school, job and government documents |
| 33 × 48 mm | Chinese passports and visas |
| 50 × 70 mm | Canadian passports |
Requirements differ between countries and change from time to time. Some countries, such as Germany, now only accept photos taken by an approved photographer or at the office itself. Check the official rules before you print.
Tips for a photo that gets accepted
- Face the camera straight on with a neutral expression and your eyes open.
- Stand in front of a plain white or light grey wall, with no patterns or shadows behind you.
- Use soft, even light from the front, such as a window, so there are no shadows on your face.
- Take off hats and tinted glasses, and keep your hair away from your eyes.
- Use a recent photo, usually taken in the last six months.
The oval guide shows roughly where your head should sit: the top of your head on the upper line and your chin on the lower line.
Print at home or at a photo shop
For online applications, download a single photo and, if the form has a size limit, set it in the Compress tab. For paper applications, switch to Print sheet. The tool fills a 4 × 6 in, 5 × 7 in, A4 or Letter page with as many copies as fit, with thin cutting guides, at 300 DPI. Print it at home at 100% scale, or take the JPG to any photo shop and order a standard 4 × 6 print. That is usually far cheaper than a photo booth.
Your photo is processed entirely in your browser and is never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a passport photo?
Most countries, including the UK, EU countries, India and Australia, use 35 × 45 mm. The USA uses 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), Canada 50 × 70 mm and China 33 × 48 mm. Rules change, so always check the current requirements of the office you apply to.
How many passport photos fit on a 4×6 print?
Eight 35 × 45 mm photos or six 2 × 2 inch photos fit on one 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) print. The Print tab shows how many fit on each paper size, and you can choose fewer.
How do I print the photos at the right size?
Download the print sheet as JPG or PDF and print it at "Actual size" or 100% scale, not "Fit to page". The file records its print size, so each photo comes out exactly right. You can also order the JPG as a 4 × 6 print at a photo shop.
Can I change the background colour?
Not yet. Take the photo in front of a plain white or light-coloured wall, and use the Adjust tab to even out the brightness.
Can I make the photo a specific file size in KB?
Yes. Open the Compress tab and set a target size, for example 50 KB, which many online application forms ask for.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser, so your photo never leaves your device.
